Teach your pet dog to stay without the ‘stay’ command

I used to be the training manager for one of the largest protection pet dog companies on earth. As a company we would import some of the finest dogs from Europe to the united states and would spend months training them to secure home and family, be obedient companions and be the best family pets any individual could ever hope for.

The investment for dogs of this caliber was frequently $25,000 per pet dog and up, and nearly every client we worked with would attest to how useful an investment it was to have an impeccably obedient canine companion that could also guard them.

By the time we were made with these high-priced dogs, they would respond swiftly and accurately to 20 or 30 commands.

Do you want to know the funny thing, though? After owning one of these dogs for months, a lot of clients would report back that although the pet dog would obey any command swiftly and happily, there were really only two or three commands used on a daily basis. Most clients would have need to tell their pet dog “come,” “down,” “come-on” and not much beyond that.

As people we are very verbal creatures. We talk and talk, and when we aren’t talking we turn on the radio or television to listen to and enjoy other people talk. It is very natural for us to also want to speak to our dogs. This is fine; there is no problem with this.

The problem, though, is in the commands we give our dogs. We give them too many! If you were to categorize and paper the commands a lot of people give their dogs on a daily basis you might find a list of 20 or more. What I’ve found is that a lot of dogs are far better off with better selected and fewer commands. In fact, a lot of people could easily stand to trim a list of 20 commands down to six or seven.

What do I indicate by that? a lot of people I see tell their dogs to “sit” and then “stay.” Why bother saying “stay” once your pet dog has sat or lied down on command? You already told him to sit; you didn’t release your dog. If your pet dog does get up from a sitting position before you’ve asked him, you don’t have a “stay” problem, you’ve got a problem getting your pet dog to understand what “sit” means.

If you ask your child to clean his or her room and the child picks up one toy, do you call that good? Selvfølgelig ikke. Your request isn’t complete until the child has finished picking up the room.

I show my dogs that once I’ve asked them to sit, lie down, wait at the door, heel by my side, come when called, etc., to keep doing it until I’ve asked them to do something else or released dem. It doesn’t stop there, though. I go into so lots of homes where the pet dog owner has a dozen words for the dog’s issues. When the pet dog jumps, the owner says “off,” “down” and “no jump.” When the puppy nips, the owner says “ouch,” “no bite” and “easy.” Why muddy the waters with so lots of commands? If your pet dog does something you don’t like, why not stick to a single word like “no” or “uh-uh”?

The bottom line is dogs are smart. If we need them to understand 20 commands, they can do it. Personally, though, I like to simplify things for them so we’re not giving needless commands. The a lot more commands you give, the much easier it is for those commands to become ignored.

What to Do When One pet dog is Jealous of the other and Growls?

What do you do if one of your dogs growls at the others out of what appears to be jealousy?

I actually get this question about once a week. I’m writing this post so I have an post to share.

I’d also like this to be a place where people can ask questions or give advice.

The scenario is typically like this:

You try to give affection to your small dog. She jumps onto your lap and you pet her. then your big pet dog techniques and sticks her head on your lap for some attention too. This is when the small pet dog proceeds to bark and growl at the big dog.

It wouldn’t have to be small pet dog vs. big dog, but let’s face it – it typically is! but it could also be two big dogs or two small dogs.

Maybe one pet dog tends to lie at the owner’s feet growling as the other pet dog approaches. Or maybe one is on the couch and growls as the other comes near.

So what’s happening here?

Well, it’s always good to seek advice from with a professional trainer if your’e anxious about aggression. Every situation is different, and it’s impossible to give recommendations on a certain dog’s behavior over email or in a general blog post.

But here’s my general feedback:

This type of growling or “guarding” makes sense. The pet dog is resource guarding and YOU are the resource.

If the pet dog doing the growling is normally the “weaker” of the two dogs, this may be the only time you ever see her growling or standing up for herself because she’s protecting her power source (YOU). You make her feel a lot more powerful and she may even feel like you’re backing her up or protecting her.

And sadly, if one dog is very pushy or bossy, the only time your a lot more sensitive or “weaker” dog might get attention in any way is when she sits on your lap or on the couch next to you. So you bet she’s going to guard you in those situations, it’s the only real affection she gets!

People might describe this as “jealousy” but it’s normally resource guarding, which is normal pet dog behavior but something we normally don’t want to encourage. See: how to break a dog’s possessiveness.

So here’s what to do:

How to stop my pet dog from getting jealous and growing at my other dog

1. Remember, you get to decide who approaches you.

You are the person in charge, right? So, YOU decide which dog sits with you and you decide which dog gets your attention and when. Your dogs don’t get to decide, not when it’s resulting in aggression or guarding. So that’s my first tip. Be aware of who you’re giving attention to and make sure you really are the one making that decision!

2. Enforce a no dogs on the furniture policy for now.

Do this especially if being on the furniture is part of what’s triggering the guarding/jealousy. I have a cat (Beamer!) who likes to sit on my bed. When my pet dog so much as walks by the bed, Beamer swipes and hisses at the dog. He’s being a bully and possessive of the bed!

So what do I do?

I immediately remove the cat from the bed and put him on the floor. It changes his state of mind and energy instantly.

3. Don’t allow the pet dog to sit at your feet guarding you.

Once you actually think about this you might realize, wow, my pet dog really does sit and guard me at my feet! If you catch either pet dog doing this, shoo her away, tether her across the room or put her in a down/stay on her pet dog bed. Or, simply get up and step somewhere else so she can’t guard you.

I run into this problem with my foster dogs quite often. The foster pet dog will lie at my feet guarding me from my pet dog Ace and I don’t even realize it because Ace doesn’t protest. The poor person just goes and lies down across the room! So be aware is all I’m saying. (2019 update: Ace has passed away.)

4. Don’t allow your other pet dog to barge up and hog your attention.

Likewise, you shouldn’t allow your other pet dog to barge up and steal your attention away when you’re choosing to give affection to the first dog. Giver det mening? Keeping your dog calm when visitors arrive

Always a problem, right?

One option is to keep your dog in another room when guests arrive, especially if the excitement is just too scary or stressful for your dog.

If you decide to keep your dog in another room, here are some tips:

Give your dog a special treat so he feels special instead of “banished.” The Zuke’s Z-filets work great for stuffing into a Kong toy or other puzzle toy to keep your dog busy.

Give your dog plenty of exercise before visitors arrive such as an extra long hike that morning.

Teach your dog to stay on his bed or “place”

I really like teaching a dog to stay on his bed or in his “place” both when visitors arrive and while guests are just hanging out.

The main problem dog owners have with this is we don’t practice the concept enough at a “low lever” of difficulty.

For example, will the dog stay on her bed for five minutes when no one new is around? Ok godt. will she stay on her bed while you open the front door to greet an imaginary person? how about if your spouse rings the doorbell?

We all have this idea of ideal dog behavior, yet we don’t give our dogs the opportunity to learn such a behavior. Det tager tid. Like, weeks and months of practice.

Here are some tips for teaching your dog to stay on her bed:

Practice in really easy scenarios and slowly increase the difficulty over time.

I’m a dog lover, but I’m still shocked when I tell people they can bring their dogs over and then they allow their dogs to tear around my apartment off leash. That is way too much energy! I can only imagine how non-dog people feel when it happens to them.

Guys, if you’re allowed to bring your dog somewhere, keep your dog as calm as possible.

Here are some tips to help with that:

Exercise, exercise, exercise! Noticing a theme?

Walk your dog for 20 minutes or so once you arrive at your destination. This will calm her nerves and give her time to relieve herself, which means no accidents.

Keep your dog leashed for at least 20 minutes once inside. This will prevent marking, drooling on furniture, possessiveness between dogs and just overall obnoxiousness.

Use an appropriate training collar that helps your dog stay calm. For Ace, a simple martingale collar would be best. A prong is just too dramatic looking, and he becomes a weirdo with his Gentle Leader on, constantly rubbing everything!

Encourage your dog to be calm and to stay on a dog bed or rug. use treats like the Zuke’s mini naturals to reward calm behavior.
