Most resilient canine toys 2022

This is a long list of some of the most resilient canine toys we evaluated out with our difficult chewers, Remy and Wally!

Remy is a 3-year-old, 60-pound weimaraner. Wally is a 1.5-year-old, 40-pound Feist mix.

We rated the toys on a durability scale of 1-5 with 5 as the best/toughest rating.

Both our dogs are very difficult on toys and we figured if a toy can last a few days with these men then it should be a pretty solid toy!

We hope you’ll add some suggestions in the comments section because there’s no way we can test out every toy. Plus, every canine is different.

If you have a difficult toy to recommend, please leave a comment and let us know:

your dog’s breed, age and weight

Best indestructible canine chew toys for the toughest chewers

This section is focused on the most resilient and “indestructible” canine toys, but no canine toy is really indestructible.

These are our favorite toys that lasted Remy and Wally the longest. Both our dogs are difficult chewers who destroy many toys!

The 6 “indestructible” chew toys that made our list:

Black Kong extreme
Nylabone toys
The practically Indestructible ball
West Paw design toys
Jolly animals toys
Outward Hound’s Bionic Bone

Because this is the “indestructible” category, we had high standards with our ratings.

1. Black Kong Extreme, $13.89

Durability rating: 5/5

Order on Amazon here

The black Kong extreme is by far the most resilient canine toy that exists! If your canine destroys all toys, get him the XXL black Kong Extreme.

Remy and Wally can’t destroy the black Kong Extreme. In fact, it’s the only toy Remy can’t ruin!

Barbara has been a huge fan of Kong toys in general for over 6 years and she purchased a variety of different strength toys from the company. It wasn’t until Wally came into her life that she had to up the ante and purchase their strongest rubber toy yet – the black Kong Extreme.

She made that investment after Wally ever so nonchalantly destroyed her former dogs’ softer pink Kong with just a few bites! The company rates its toys by color, with black as the toughest.

Features of the black Kong Extreme:

Designed for power chewers
made of tough, natural, non-toxic rubber
Bounces
Can be stuffed with treats and/or food
Lavet i USA
top rack dishwasher safe
available in 5 sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL)

We recommend the XXL size for the strongest chewers!

Wally’s favorite way of entertaining himself with the black Kong extreme is by getting his raw food out of it.

Barbara stuffs the Kongs with pre-made raw food from companies like Darwin’s, places them in the freezer overnight, and then provides them to Wally. It takes him about 45 minutes to get the frozen raw food out of the large sized Kong.

The large black Kong extreme holds about 4 ounces of food. clean up is a breeze because the Kongs are top rack dishwasher safe.

Get the Kong extreme here.

Other Kong extreme toys

Durability rating: 3/5

Remy has tried numerous of the other black Kong extreme toys such as the extreme Ball, the extreme Tire and the extreme Goodie Bone.

While these would be great for moderate or even strong chewers, he was able to destroy all of them within a few minutes. We still recommend them for the average dog, but they are not as resilient as the standard shaped black Kong for whatever reason.

Our verdict on Kong extreme toys: We highly recommend the Kong extreme (in the original “Kong” shape) for the toughest chewers. For large and huge breeds, get the XXL size.

2. Nylabone toys

Nylabone makes a variety of resilient chew toys that can hold up longterm to strong chewers like Remy and Wally.

Nylabone provides four varieties of chew toys:

Puppy teething
moderate chewers
strong chewers
Power chewers

Nylabone DuraChew big Chew chicken flavor Bone, $16.24

Durability rating: 5/5

Get it here.

This Nylabone toy is from the “‘power chewers” category. It is made out of extra difficult nylon, and it sure is tough!

Lindsay used to purchase one every few months for Remy, especially when he was younger and naughtier! It was always good to have one or two of these chew toys lying around whatsoever times, and Remy would chew on them instead of shoes or furniture! (God dreng!)

Each DuraChew big Chew bone would last Remy for about a month, which was better than practically any other chew toy besides the black Kong Extreme.

That being said, Lindsay does worry a bit about giving Remy Nylabone toys because he is such a strong chewer she worries he could crack a tooth (he never actually has, she just worries).

They are certainly a great option if you have a much more moderate chewer or a teething puppy!

Nylabone Busy-Time Stuffable canine Chew, $4.99

Durability rating: 4/5

Order on Amazon here.

This toy is from Nylabone’s “strong chewers” category. toys in this category are made of rubber and are not as hard as the toys in their “power chewers” category.

Barbara’s canine walking client Maximus has this toy and it has lasted him several months already. Maximus is an 80 lb Labrador/German shepherd mix (pictured above).

Wally got to test the Nylabone Busy-Time Stuffable toy as well. He had fun chewing on the largest sized toy (Maximus is featured with the medium size).

Features of the Nylabone Busy-Time Stuffable toy:

Stuff it with treats, raw or canned food or peanut butter
Made of durable, natural rubber
Available in three sizes
Bounces and rolls
Features raised dental nubs to help clean canine teeth
Comes with synthetic bacon flavor made with non-animal ingredients
Hand-wash only (not dishwasher safe)

Wally’s favorite way of entertaining himself with this Nylabone stuffable toy is by eating his raw food and peanut butter out of it, which keeps him busy for about 45 minutes. He’s had it for about a week now and has yet to do any damage to the toy!

Our verdict on Nylabone toys: Nylabone makes a variety of resilient toys and there are numerous options for different dogs.

We highly recommend the brand because you ought to be able to find a toy that works well for your distinct dog. Their toys for “power chewers” are certainly very resilient and hard, so it’s essential to understand your dog’s chewing style.

3. practically Indestructible ball Toy, $16.79

Durability rating: 5/5

Order on Chewy.com.

Lindsay purchased the “Virtually Indestructible ball Toy” from Chewy.com because of the name. We wanted to find out just how “indestructible” it is.

Remy is obsessed with pushing this toy around and it lives up to the name. It’s made of strong plastic, and he can’t pick it up or puncture it. This actually really frustrates him! He will get onto this ball with his front paws and growl at it as he tries to bite it.

He’s managed to scratch it up pretty good with his teeth and nails but it is not destroyed and not even punctured after about 6 weeks.

This is an awesome, very resilient toy, and we didn’t even purchase the largest size. We went with the medium, 10” size.

We recommend the practically Indestructible ball if you have a fenced yard because it’s too hard and noisy to be pushed around the house. It tends to slam into the walls and furniture and could easily break things! Lindsay doesn’t have a yard so she took Remy to a big, open park to play with this toy.

Features of the practically Indestructible ball:

Dogs can’t puncture it, even really big dogs
100% non-toxic
Lavet i USA
easy to clean with a hose
Possessive dogs like Remy can’t pick it up and “keep it away” from you
keeps dogs entertained as they push it around
offers good exercise
good option for herding breeds
comes in 3 sizes (6”, 10” and 14”)

Our verdict: This is a very resilient toy that Remy has not been able to destroy after several weeks of play. We highly recommend it as an outdoor toy for big and difficult dogs. It’s great to kick around and use it to interact and play with your dog. However, note that some dogs might be frustrated that they can’t pick it up.

4. West Paw design toys

West Paw design sent us some of their toughest toys to test out at no cost.

We like that West Paw Design’s toys are categorized for difficult chewers, moderate chewers and light chewers. here are a few examples of West Paw design toys that our dogs tested. extra points for West Paw because they are headquartered in Bozeman, Mont., where Lindsay and Remy live.

West Paw Hurley canine Bone, $15.95

Durability rating: 4/5

Order the Hurley bone on Amazon.

West Paw’s Hurley bone is made with the company’s “Zogoflex” material and is developed to last for long chewing sessions. This toy is solid (not hollow in the middle) and fits into West Paw’s “tough chewers” category. They call it the “ultra-durable bone.”

While Remy was able to damage this toy, we think it is pretty tough, one of the strongest toys we tested. Our only wish is that the company would make a larger version of this toy. The large Hurley bone is 8” long and we think if it were larger it would last big dogs a lot longer.

Features of the Hurley Bone toy:

Available in 3 sizes
Lavet i USA
Floats
One of West Paw’s toughest toys
Tåler opvaskemaskine
Non-toxic, totally free of BPA and latex

Remy chewed on the Hurley bone for a solid 30 minutes.

West Paw Zwig Toy, $ 16,95

Holdbarhedsvurdering: 4/5

Funktioner i Zwig -legetøjet:

Flyder
Lavet i USA
Ikke-giftig, helt fri for BPA, latex, phthalater

West Paw Skamp Toy, $ 17,95

Funktioner i Skamp Toy:

Flyer inspireret med 3 arme
Flyder og fluer langt
Tåler opvaskemaskine
Lavet i USA
Ikke-giftig, helt fri for BPA, latex, phthalater

Holdbarhedsvurdering: 4/5

Bestil på Amazon her.

Remy evaluerede Jolly Animals “Romp and Roll” -kuglen. This toy can be kicked or thrown. It floats, even if punctured, and it can be used for playing tug.

Remy was obsessed with this toy best away. His eyes bugged out when he first saw it!

It’s fun to play tug with this toy because the big ball in the middle protects your hands and acts as a shield from crazy dogs like Remy.

Features of the Romp and Roll ball:

Available in three sizes (4.5”, 6” or 8”)
Puncture resistant
Interactive toy & great for tug
Non-toxic
Floats

En “Hand Me Down” -hund.

Ikke en redningshund.

Han er en hund.

I love him because he is mine.

Bør have en amerikansk postadresse at vinde.

The exact same is true with altering our dogs’ diets. believe of one little method you can enhance your dog’s diet.

[quote_center]Think of one little method you can enhance your dog’s diet.[/quote_center]

For example, exactly how about changing from an typical dry dog food brand to a somewhat higher-quality brand? Or, if you’re feeding a industrial raw diet, exactly how about buying the choice with organic components every other time you shop? That method you’re improving your dog’s diet plan a bit without totally breaking your budget.

Or, exactly how about getting rid of one lower-quality component from your dog’s diet, such as corn?

3. play with your dog every day.

How many days go by where you don’t play with your dog at all? It happens, right?

Let’s make a point to play with our dogs every day!

I’m not speaking about hours of playing. I mean, spend even 2 or 3 minutes right here as well as there however just making sure to engage with your dog in a fun method every day.

Some concepts might include:

[check_list]

Playing tug or fetch

Getting your dog to chase you

Hiding with treats as well as motivating your dog to discover you

[/check_list]

It’s important to play with our dogs since it enhances our bond as well as makes us fun as well as interesting!

4. plan for future vet costs.

It’s simple to put off conversations or planning about exactly how you may handle costly veterinary costs that come up for your dog. However, it’s much better to plan ahead for exactly how you will handle such costs vs. making decisions in the spur of the moment when you are more likely to be worried, emotional as well as stressed.

Is pet insurance coverage worth considering? should you begin saving money? will you depend on care Credit?

These are important things to begin believing about before any type of problems come up.

5. select one dog training goal to focus on.

I’m sure your dog has all type of behavioral problems he might enhance upon, right? ?

Rather than wanting you might modification six things about your dog, exactly how about selecting one to focus on for now?

Perhaps it’s lastly mastering loose-leash walking or lastly getting your dog to be calm when people see or perhaps it’s mentor him to stay on his dog bed.

Whatever it may be, try to pick just one as well as come up with a plan that will work for you as well as your dog. when you’ve made development there, add one more training goal.

And of course, the majority of dogs will be much more likely to pay interest during training if we utilize extremely valued treats!

How to Potty Train a Puppy in an apartment or condo

Easy. adopt an adult pet dog who’s already potty trained! That’s what I did the first time around anyway!

OK, but seriously. It’s absolutely affordable to adopt a puppy if you live in an apartment. It’s not about where you live. It’s about how much time you can commit to that pet.

Potty training a puppy in an apartment or condo does have a few challenges though.

Mainly, it’s often a long ways to the potty area, so it’s harder to get your puppy outside quickly.

It takes a lot a lot more time to regularly let the puppy outside when you live on, say, the 20th floor. It’s not like you can just open the door and plop the puppy down on the grass. That being said, you can still make it work.

Tips for potty training a puppy in an apartment

1. Potty train the puppy in an apartment or condo the same way you would potty train a puppy in a house.

You can read the details about that here, but the basics are:

– let the puppy out often (like, every 45 minutes when he’s not in a kennel).

– Supervise in any way times when he’s not in a kennel by keeping him on a leash. a lot more on that here.

– use a kennel or gated area when you can’t supervise.

2. carry the puppy to the potty area.

If you live in an apartment, it makes sense to carry your puppy down the hall and down the stairs for the first couple of weeks to stop the puppy from going potty on the way outside.

I asked professional pet dog trainer Jill Morstad about this, and she said:

“Yes, the very young puppy will do best if the owner snaps the leash on and then carries the pup from the apartment or condo to the outside door.

“Even though I live in a ranch house—no stairs except to the basement—I’ll open the crate door and snap the leash on ideal there, then scoop up the young pup and carry them through the kitchen to the back door.”

She said a puppy won’t be able to “hold it” while you go from indoors to outdoors until they’re a few weeks “older and wiser.”

3. skip the indoor potty pads or newspapers.

I’m really against indoor puppy potty pads, fake lawn and those types of products. You can read a lot more about my opinion on that here.

Sure, there are always exceptions, but ultimately if you do not want your future adult pet dog going potty in the apartment or condo then it’s best to avoid training your puppy to go potty in your apartment.

Morstad is not in favor of puppy pads or “paper breaking” either.

“A pet dog learns by association, and if you allow him to do his tasks in the house—even on pads or on newspaper—you are in effect teaching the pet dog to potty in the house.”

She said any healthy pup eight weeks of age or older can go outside, even in cold weather.

“You take him out just long enough to do his duties.”

A few additional ideas:

Ignore all accidents. Just get him out quicker next time.
Use highly valued food rewards every single time your puppy goes potty outside. Like, real chicken or bits of hamburger or steak.
Don’t be lazy. Laziness is probably the main issue with potty training problems.

That’s about all there is to it! For a lot more info, you may want to read my post on potty training an adult pet dog here.

Now I want to hear from you.

Have you ever potty trained a puppy in an apartment? Hvad gjorde du?

Prevent dogs from satisfying head on

Dogs are getting crazier. people just don’t comprehend them.

I’ve never gone to a pet dog adoption event without some idiot enabling his stressed-out pet dog to fee ideal as much as the pet dog I’m handling.

Last week I was managing a sweet, laid-back American pit bull terrier named Jada who is a bit pet dog aggressive. Even after I told other handlers that “my” pet dog doesn’t do well with other dogs, a lot more than one enabled his or her pet dog to run ideal as much as Jada’s face. This is not fair to any type of dog, particularly one who is discovering exactly how to interact socially appropriately with others.

People are excellent at setting up their dogs as well as other people’s dogs for failure. When you’re taking care of powerful breeds, the errors can be huge.

Luckily, when dogs do get into scuffles, it’s normally “talk” as well as no bite. There’s a great deal of growling as well as barking, however nobody gets hurt. It seems poor to us, however the dogs step on immediately.

Handling a rescue pet dog at adoption events is one of the most satisfying things I can do as a pet dog enthusiast as well as trainer. I like assisting a pet dog learn, interact socially as well as have some fun while ideally satisfying the ideal family. however going to these events likewise difficulties me, since I never understand what other people are going to do.

Below are some ideas I utilize to make it through circumstances where a great deal of dogs with different energy levels as well as irresponsible owners are together in a little space.

How to prevent satisfying other dogs head on

1. prevent standing against walls or barriers.

When I’m sitting against the wall with “my” dog, it’s difficult to step away from other dogs that fee us. If you’re standing or sitting at an adoption event, a pet dog show or a training class, don’t sit where your pet dog might feel trapped. You will have nowhere to go if one more pet dog techniques you.

I’ve likewise discovered that sitting on the ground assists me manage my pet dog much easier since I’m at her level with less slack in the leash.

2. walk into your pet dog so she has to back away from the other dog.

I see a great deal of people desperately pulling back on tense leashes. Pulling produces a lot more tension as well as enjoyment which will motivate the pet dog to withstand as well as pull even harder. This commonly leads to lunging, barking as well as “choking.”

It’s much a lot more efficient to calmly turn into your pet dog as well as walk ideal into her. Don’t kick her, just insurance claim her space. This will distract her from the other pet dog as well as cause her to back away while looking up at you. This is the best time to offer her a treat. breaking eye get in touch with between the two dogs will assist re-direct the other dog’s attention, too. It must likewise send a remove message to its owner that an interaction at this time around would be a poor idea.

3. Be direct with people about your dog’s aggression issues.

Most people presume all dogs are friendly, even if theirs isn’t. Make sure to tell other owners that your pet dog does refrain from doing well with other dogs. You’ll most likely still have to step away from some people, since specific individuals just don’t get it. I understand at least one guy who believes managing an aggressive pet dog makes him a poor ass.

4. stay calm.

I understand this is much easier stated then done. a lot of of us have to consciously remind ourselves not to overreact or tense up, particularly if we’re predicting the worst. The a lot more kicked back you are, the a lot more kicked back your pet dog will be.

5. difficulty your pet dog in little ways.

Look for laid-back, submissive dogs as well as describe to their owners that you would like your pet dog to begin satisfying other dogs. Be upfront with them if she has aggression issues. keep the leashes kicked back as well as enable each pet dog to odor the other’s butt before they make direct eye get in touch with (awkward, I know). If the dogs seem okay with one one more as well as there is no tension, let them sniff for a few seconds, however stop while your pet dog is successful.

6. Take breaks.

Do not push your pet dog as well far. If she seems stressed or excited, take her for a short walk away from everybody else as well as return when she is calmer. If the circumstance seems as well overwhelming for your dog, don’t be terrified to leave early.

7. If errors happen, forgive yourself as well as step on.

When you’re taking care of ecstatic dogs as well as inexperienced handlers, there are going to be some scuffles. utilize these as discovering experiences so you do not make the exact same errors several times. If your pet dog lunges or snaps, do not overreact. såvel somOverreager ikke, hvis en andens kæledyrshund prøver at angribe din hund. Genanvendelse af omstændighederne såvel som trin på.

How to teach A dog the Word OFF

Today I’m writing about how to teach a dog the word OFF as in “Get your paws OFF me!”

The biggest behavioral problem I’m having with my pup Remy right now is he has no respect for personal space. Nul. and he’s getting big (60 pounds).

Remy will jump on people, paw at people, sit on people and shove toys at people.

This is rude, and it hurts!

I do not approve of other people’s dogs jumping on me, and I will not tolerate it from my pup.

I want my dog to keep his paws off me, so I’m teaching him the word OFF.

How to teach a dog the word OFF

I’m teaching my dog the command “OFF” so I can turn his bad behavior into something positive.

Instead of scolding him all the time, I can tell him “OFF” and reward him. “Yay! god dreng!”

Here are the steps I’m using, but you’ll have to brainstorm what would work best for your puppy or dog.

1. choose a reward for your dog.

What motivates your puppy or dog to focus?

Most likely, it’s food. I use treats for training Remy because they help his little pea brain focus.

When choosing treats, find something that is motivating enough for your dog that you can get his focus away from the issue (in this case, jumping) but not so motivating that he loses all control.

2. choose one specific issue at a time.

It makes sense to use “OFF!” in all sorts of scenarios like stopping a dog from jumping on people in the doorway, pawing at people on the couch or pawing at people on patio furniture.

But it’s easier for dogs, and especially puppies, if we focus on one issue at a time. You can use OFF for many scenarios eventually, but start with just one.

With Remy, I’m starting with not jumping on me or others who are standing in our apartment, mostly in the doorway and main living room area.

3. ignore the jumping/pawing.

This is easier said than done.

Most puppies don’t care if you ignore them. They continue to jump because it’s fun, especially if you keep turning around like some trainers suggest. This is a fun game!

Puppies also don’t seem to care if you scold them with “no” or even a firm shove. That’s attention! (If your puppy is more sensitive a firm no might help. Not so with Remy.)

Here’s how I ignore Remy when he’s jumping:

I show no emotion. I don’t look at him or say anything. I take my phone, sit on a tall stool and intently focus on texting or checking email.

Or, I lean up against our tall countertop with my back to him. Or, I calmly step over the baby gate and stand on the other side. (He has no idea he could just jump the gate.)

He gets nothing from me.

4. toss a treat the second your dog’s paws are on the ground.

Once your dog’’s paws are on the ground, toss him a treat. He might start jumping again. just ignore him again.

When all paws are on the ground again, toss another treat.

My spaz of a pup caught on very quickly how to get his treats. He has no attention span and can do this, so there’s hope for most! bare vær tålmodig.

5. add the command.

There’s no need to add the “off” command until your pup seems to have some concept of how to get the treats. Otherwise, you’re just saying “off” when he has no clue what you want.

So after a few sessions and he seems to be catching on, say “Off! god dreng!” as you toss the treat.

If you want to use a clicker, you could definitely use one for this. Remy responds well to it.

6. slowly lengthen the time before you toss the treats.

At first you want to toss a treat the instant your pup’s paws are on the ground, but eventually you want to pause 1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds and so on. Otherwise, you end up with a knucklehead who thinks he can jump on you, lie down and get a treat, jump on you, lie down, get a treat.

Um, nope!

7. start using OFF to ask for the behavior you want.

Now that your dog has a concept of “off” you can start using it as a command/cue. There’s no need to wait for the behavior, you can ask him to do so at this point.

Belønning! god dreng!

Common problems with teaching “off”:

1. Consistency.

It’s hard to be consistent!

2. It’s challenging with guests.

My pup has no self control around guests at this point.

With visitors, I recommend you simply kennel your dog for a bit so you can focus on your guests. Or, you could have him on a leash with a gentle Leader or EasyWalk harness for extra control.

I ask visitors to ignore my dog until he calms down, but I don’t expect them to follow through. Instead, I block the jumping with a leash. At least this blocks the habit. If your dog bites the leash like mine does, you can get a chain leash for training purposes.

3. It’s hard not to freak out and scold.

Jeg forstår det! sometimes you get upset and you holler “NO!” stykke tidS dette fungerer endda.

5. Hunden hopper stadig i andre scenarier.

6. For meget energi.

Her er min generelle ordre:

1. Lang gåtur bedst væk såvel som gode øvelser hver dag

2. Potty træning

3. Kennel/kasseuddannelse

4. Grundlæggende regler

5. Mentor The Canine hans navn

Jeg angiver “nej” meget, uanset hvor roligt roligt. however I try to pause as well as let the canine believe for himself.

I am continuously working on my patience.

So that’s where I begin.

Where do you begin when training a new dog?

And doesn’t Ace look so young in the picture? That’s when he was about a year old. ?

How to stop a Puppy From Chewing

Well, unfortunately you can’t stop a puppy from chewing. Puppies need to chew because they are teething.

But, you can prevent them from chewing your shoes and furniture by providing them with appropriate items to chew like bully sticks and toys.

The following are some of our tips to stop a teething puppy from inappropriate chewing.

Raw bones for chewing

When puppies start teething, their gums hurt, very similar to what human babies experience when their teeth start coming in. They’re going to look for something chewable to ease the pain in their gums.

It’s really important that puppies are offered safe and appropriate items to chew while they go through the teething stage.

Also see our post: stop a puppy from biting!

Puppies explore with their mouths

Puppies are curious and explore their surroundings with their mouths and their paws. They’re just as interested in chewing on one of your fingers as they are on a furniture leg or shoe. It’s simply fun for a puppy to chew and gnaw!

We’ll be showing you ways to redirect your puppy’s random chewing attacks to more proper ways to use his sharp puppy teeth.

That brings us to another reason why puppies chew on everything.

Puppies chew when they’re bored!

Lana

Teething puppies who are bored are probably the worst combination and will get into considerable chewing mischief unless redirected!

Bored puppies will find something to entertain themselves, and it’s usually something we won’t appreciate.

Things that come to mind are those expensive leather loafers, a wooden furniture leg, clothes, kids’ toys or electrical cords. The list is obviously endless.

The same concept applies to adult dogs, by the way. They can get bored too!

Adult dogs also need an outlet for their boredom. While bored puppies are usually only annoying, adult dogs who aren’t challenged mentally can represent a real danger to themselves and others.

For example, an adult dog might dig themselves out of their yard, just to mention one potentially dangerous situation.

How long does the puppy chewing stage last?

Puppies start their teething phase between 5 to 8 weeks of age. but this is only the beginning! the worst chewing stage usually lasts five to six months, and many young dogs continue to chew after that.

Our favorite puppy chews are filled, frozen KONG toys. simply fill your puppy’s KONG toys with peanut butter, yogurt or his food, stick them into the freezer overnight, then offer to your puppy.

He’ll be busy entertaining himself for quite some time with his fun chew while soothing his sore gums with the amazing food.

How to stop a puppy from chewing – 7 tips

1. “Puppy proof” the room to prevent chewing

Lindsay tried to “puppy proof” her living room and home office the best she could by keeping items off the ground. These were the rooms her puppy Remy spent the most time in when he was not in his kennel.

Remy would grab stray socks, cups, pens or pretty much anything that happened to be on the floor! So Lindsay also made sure there were no chargers, head phone chords, etc., dangling at Remy’s eye level.

She kept all her shoes on a small shelf and after telling Remy “no” a few times, he understood shoes on the shelf were off limits.

She also knew not to trust Remy for more than 3 minutes or so unsupervised. Each pup is different.

*If you just got a new puppy, download my free puppy training guide. Klik her

2. Rotate toys to keep your puppy interested.

Offering a variety of toys helps to keep the puppy’s interest.

Lindsay kept 2 to 4 toys out for her foster puppy Lana at a time. Lana had about 5 favorite toys to chew and play with, so whenever she was not in her kennel, Lindsay chose a few toys to give her.

That way, if Lana tried to chew or grab something like the remote control or a sock, Lindsay would calmly say “no” and then offer Lana a rope toy or ball. “God pige!”

You can also mix up the kinds of treats you use to stuff in Kongs and other treat-dispensing toys. one day it might be peanut butter and a biscuit the next it might be yogurt or a banana.

Miss Lana

3. provide different types of toys for teething puppies.

It helps if you know what types of toys your puppy likes to chew the most. Lana loved to chew on rubber Kong-type toys, balls and rope toys.

She didn’t care as much for plastic squeaky toys, and she didn’t get to have stuffed toys because she ruined them immediately!

Same goes with edible chews. Some puppies like to chew on Himalayan cheese chews or bully sticks while others might like Greenies or hooves.

4. Calmly say “no” when your puppy chews something inappropriate.

Rather than ignoring Lana for chewing something, Lindsay would calmly and firmly tell her “no” and then quickly offer her a toy and reward her.

Some trainers will tell you to just ignore unwanted behavior, which is a terrific idea for many scenarios. For chewing, we like to catch the puppy right before she has a chance to chew or right as she has the item and tell her “no.”

Look at this crazy dog:

5. use bitter apples spray to stop a puppy from chewing

If your puppy just can not seem to leave certain items alone such as a table leg, bitter apple spray is one tool to consider.

Bitter apple spray is just as it sounds. It’s a bad-tasting spray that will not harm your puppy but will hopefully stop her from chewing furniture, her leash, etc.

Some puppies don’t seem to even notice the spray, while it does work well for others.

*If you just got a new puppy, download my free puppy training guide. Klik her

6. Train your puppy to lie down and stay.

Teaching your puppy all the basic obedience commands like sit, down, stay and come will help her build more self-control overall.

The most valuable command when dealing with chewing is “stay.” That way, you can put your puppy in a down/stay, and she will stay there for at least short periods of time. start with just a second or two, of course, and slowly work up to 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 mins, etc.

7. provide your teething puppy with lots of exercise!

Increasing your teething puppy’s exercise is not going to stop her from chewing, but it will decrease her energy overall which means she is more likely to relax and just lie down.

OK … sometimes it may seem like your puppy is never going to be tired, but increased exercise can only help. Make sure your puppy is getting time to run and play in an off-leash area if possible, and make sure to take her on long walks.

See my post on walking a puppy before she’s had her vaccinations.

How to stop a puppy from chewing when left alone

Use a kennel or gated-off area when you can’t supervise.

When Lindsay couldn’t supervise Lana, she left her in her kennel. even if Lana was left alone for 15 minutes while Lindsay took a shower, it was just easier to leave Lana in her kennel.

Leaving her alone for even 10 minutes would give her way too much time to chew something she shouldn’t.

We like to recommend a kennel (crate), but you could also try gating off a bathroom or kitchen area or perhaps using an exercise pen, which is a gate set up sort of like a toddler’s “play pen.”

When your puppy is alone, you want to leave her some tempting, appropriate items to chew on like a Kong toy. It also helps to provide exercise before you leave and again when you return.

How to stop a puppy from chewing shoes

Prevention is always our first approach when it comes to puppies chewing on items they’re not supposed to be chewing. That’s why our top three tips to stop a puppy from chewing shoes are:

Young adult dogs as well as older dogs might continue to chew because:

it’s an instinctual need
chewing & gnawing exercises their jaws
it engages them mentally
relieves boredom
some dogs are just naturally inclined to chew more than others

Barbara’s dog Wally was 1.5 years young when she adopted him, and she quickly noticed that Wally most definitely likes to chew!
